"Duchess" is a fictionalized account of the life of Sarah Churchill (born Jennings). At the young age of thirteen, she is sent to the court of the king's brother, James. Sarah's mother did not want her around anymore, being a bitter widow and resenting her daughter for having been born to her at an old age.
